John Hunter FRS (1728-1793) by John Jackson after a portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds painted in 1786. Hunter was a distinguished surgeon, who, among many other achievements, was appointed Surgeon to King George III. The Hunterian Society is named after him.
In 1786 Hunter performed minor surgery on Pitt when he removed a cyst from his cheek. The operation was performed at Downing Street.
Pitt showed a sangfroid equal to the standards of a pre-anaesthetic age. He would not let Hunter tie his hands as was normally done, assured him that he would not move, and asked how long the surgeon would take. On being told six minutes he fixed his eyes on the Horse Guards’ clock, and remained motionless until it was over, when he remarked cheerfully ‘You have exceeded your time half a minute’.Quoted from The Younger Pitt vol 1 by John Ehrman
